University of Houston Invests in the Future of Engineering and Nursing

Two major philanthropic gifts are strengthening research, graduate education, faculty development, and community-focused nursing programs

Houston, Texas, 1 October 2026 – The University of Houston is receiving fresh support for two fields that play an important role in the future of technology and healthcare. Two philanthropic gifts totaling $5 million are set to strengthen engineering research and nursing education, while creating new opportunities for students, faculty, and the wider Houston community.

The larger contribution is a $4 million gift from Manmohan Singh Kalsi and Marie Luise Schubert Kalsi to the University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering. The funding will support graduate fellowships and programs connected to mechanical and aerospace engineering. It will also establish two endowed professorships designed to help attract and retain experienced faculty members.

The gift will also create the Kalsi Faculty Research Fund, which is intended to help advance emerging research projects. Another part of the initiative is the upcoming Kalsi Seminar Series. Through the series, industry professionals will be invited to the university to share their knowledge and work directly with students and researchers.

For students, the combination of financial support, faculty expertise, and industry interaction can create more opportunities to connect classroom learning with practical engineering challenges. Graduate fellowships can also help students spend more time on advanced research and specialized areas of study.

The contribution has a personal connection to the university. Manmohan Kalsi earned both his master’s degree and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of Houston before founding Kalsi Engineering in 1978. His company developed technologies involving hydrodynamic rotary seals and valves used in nuclear power applications. He also previously established an endowed professorship at the Cullen College in memory of former UH professor Gabriel Fazekas.

The second gift comes from the Hamill Foundation, which has contributed $1 million to the University of Houston’s Andy and Barbara Gessner College of Nursing. The funding will establish the Hamill Foundation Endowed Professorship in Community Care Nursing. The position will focus on community-based nursing education, partnerships, research, and outreach, particularly in underserved Houston communities.

The funding will also support efforts connected to nursing workforce needs through the university’s UH Health program. The latest contribution is the Hamill Foundation’s largest single gift to the university. The foundation has previously donated $6 million to UH.

Together, the gifts show how philanthropic support can influence education beyond traditional classroom instruction. Engineering students can gain greater access to research and industry knowledge, while nursing students and faculty can benefit from programs focused on community healthcare and workforce development.

The contributions are also part of the University of Houston’s $1 billion Can’t Stop Houston: The Centennial Campaign. As of September 2026, the university had raised more than $881 million toward the campaign. UH is preparing to mark its 100th anniversary in March 2027.

As universities respond to changing workforce needs, investments in specialized education, research, and community partnerships can help build stronger connections between academic knowledge and real-world challenges. At Houston, the latest gifts are adding new resources to two areas with direct links to technological progress and patient care.
